How-to – Manage your browser add-ons

Here’s a quick tip on how to manage your browser add-ons or extensions. Often, when installing stuff compulsively, add-ons often get installed WITH your consent, but without you knowing it.

Internet Explorer

In the menus, go in Tools > Manage Add-ons

Google Chrome

Type this URL : chrome://extensions/

Then delete the extensions you don’t need.

Firefox

Type about:addons or press Ctrl+Shift+A.

Now, some intrusive add-ons can’t be completely removed that way and must be removed with anti-malware tools. I recommend Malwarebytes free tool to do this. If you have any questions, lemme know!

Windows 10 Part 1 – Upgrading to Windows 8.1

Hello dear readers!

I hope you all refrained from upgrading to Windows 10 on day one! Never a good idea; instead, let others mess things up and find solutions for you. Like me! :D

First step getting Windows 10 is to either be running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Since I went directly from Windows XP Pro to Windows 8 Pro, I had to upgrade to 8.1 first. For those of you who prefer doing “clean installs” (I’m one of those, though I won’t this time), see references to download the Windows 10 media.

What went wrong

• Had to uninstall printer software/drivers and re-install after the update.
• Folder Libraries are disabled by default in 8.1. Annoying, yes, but pretty simple to re-enable them. It’s the very first answer in Microsoft’s FAQ. (see references)
• Had to re-install/upgrade my Comodo Firewall and doing so, lost all my firewall settings. That’s normal since the system changed, thus everything is a “new” application. I now have to re-authorize applications as I go. I’ll be back to normal in a day or two.
• The Windows lock screen picture changed back to the default image. Mine used to be the one with Seattle’s Space Needle tower. Again, super easy to change.
• I lost my Windows “run” history (shortcut: Windows Key + R). Not a big deal, but still worth mentioning.
• Windows Defender stopped working, but after some updates, it finally got back to normal.

NOTE : Always have an antivirus, anti-spyware and backup solution.

What went right

• Everything else! All my production software (GIMP, Blender, Unity3D, etc.) and games (Steam, Battle.net, etc.) are working perfectly.

Haters

If you don’t like your Windows, please, let me know! I’m sure I can help you. I know frustrated users (often, myself) usually have good reasons to be. But once you understand things, it becomes JOY.

If you did ask me for help and still hate Windows, there’s more I can do for ‘ya! Bring some rope, quick-setting cement, a sleeping bag and we’ll be good to go.

ASK – The only thing to do to protect yourself online

Most people just fill out any form they see online. They install software, download stuff without even knowing what they’re doing. They then wonder why they have viruses, receive spam, get their identity stolen or why their computer isn’t running as fast as before…

Playground

The Internet is NOT a safe playground. Even legitimate website can be compromised. Recently, a small error in a security protocol (known as Heart Bleed) was enough to allow unscrupulous individuals to steal private information. People should always be weary of what they do and what information they provide while connected to the Internet. Also, once something is made PUBLIC, it’s to late to “remove” it.

Cracks

Just realize: a single code breach (which you have no control over) is enough to compromise your privacy and security… Now imagine all your home’s doors and windows opened instead of a crack… that’s what using the Internet is when you don’t know what you’re doing.

Don’t feel stupid ASKING others when you’re not sure about something. Whenever doubting, ASK.

Knowledge is everything.
