Unity3D – Asset Store Downloads

Posted in Browser, Unity3D with tags on December 13, 2013 by Sirusdark

Recently, I was trying to do the simplest thing ever : download something from Unity3D’s Asset Store, using a web browser, but was only given the option to “Open in Unity”… What the heck?

Unity3d Open in Unity

Short answer is, the store’s assets can only be accessed WITHIN Unity3D. How pleasant…

Here’s Unity3D Asset Store default folder location :

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Application Data\Unity\Asset Store

Now, as if this wasn’t bad enough to be forced to use Unity3D to browse their Asset Store, you can’t:

-Choose where to download
-Choose a default Asset Store folder location
-Download only:  this option is not always available.

Download Only Tip

To just download or download individual files within an asset, open Unity3D, open the Asset Store (Ctrl+9), then click the small hard drive icon (between home and cart icons):

All in all, Unity3D Asset Store is unproductive, wastes a lot of time and its navigation is very unintuitive. But the content is very valuable.

Life is full of compromises…

Unity3D Community (forums, feedback, questions, etc.)

Finally, on Unity3D forums, you don’t have an easy way to access/view your own posts. My trick is to click on your own name to view your profile (from a post you made, ’cause you can’t even click on your account name to view it), then bookmark the page and use it when you need to browse your questions.

Enjoy!
